I love Grammar.... but I suck at it :(
I love Grammar.... but I suck at it :(
Hello everyone;
I am a stickler for proper grammar and usage in my own writing. Bad writing makes a very negative first impression on people, and on me as well. I think that if we're a people who share a common language or learning a foreign one, we should all speak and write it correctly.
English, however, is a terribly inconsistent language. Food does not rhyme with good. The letter 'y' is sometimes a vowel, sometimes a consonant. We drive on parkways and park in driveways. We have the infamous "i before e" rule that has so many exceptions we had to make a rhyme of it. English is a bewildering array of sometimes-rules that takes a lot of effort to master.
Every language has its complexities, of course, but most are in some way simpler. In Finnish, once you've learned the sounds of all the letters, you can pronounce anything. The sounds don't change as they do in English. In Mandarin, there are no plurals; they say one dog, two dog, and three dog. In German, all the nouns are capitalized. In Spanish, they don't even bother with a word for the concept "it." They just skip the whole thing. If that thing over there is red, they say "is red." Done.
What's wonderful about English Grammar is its uniqueness, for me. It gives the language a personality of its own, something that no other language can duplicate. English is also much more concise and less wordy. We can say more in less words, which is one of the reasons that English is the official language of air traffic control worldwide.
Well, I'm going to post my first book on this forum, I hope you will like it. It helped me quite a lot with my Grammar, and I'm sure it will help you too
